What is Labiaplasty?

Labia come in many different shapes and sizes, and there is a huge range of what qualifies as normal labia. Labia may be symmetrical or asymmetrical, and the labia minora may be longer or shorter than the labia majora. Labiaplasty typically shortens the labia minora so that it does not extend past the labia majora. While it is normal for the labia minora to be longer than the labia majora, this can cause discomfort or pain during sex or exercise, such as running or biking. Labiaplasty may also be performed for cosmetic reasons.

Are You a Candidate?

While all sizes and shapes of labia are considered normal, labiaplasty can improve your comfort and well-being. Pregnancy, childbirth, or hormonal changes may change the shape and size of your labia. The procedure can be performed for medical reasons as well as cosmetic reasons. Labiaplasty can help:

  • Reduce discomfort caused by labia getting pinched or tugged during exercise or intercourse
  • Reduce asymmetry of the labia
  • Improve hygiene
  • Increase self-confidence and sexual well-being

What is the Surgical Procedure for Labiaplasty?

Labiaplasty is usually an outpatient procedure. It can be performed either in the office or in the operating room with anesthesia. This will depend on a patient’s anatomy as well as personal comfort and preference. Most labiaplasties can generally be completed in about an hour. There are two main techniques used in labiaplasty:

  • Edge resection: This technique trims the excess parts of the labia minora that protrude past the labia majora.
  • Wedge resection: By cutting wedge-shaped pieces of skin out of the labia and bringing the remaining skin together with sutures, wedge resection retains the original labial edges.

How Long is the Recovery?

After your procedure, you can expect to experience some soreness, bruising, and swelling. You should be able to return to work within a week. Dr. Cohen will provide instructions to help make your recovery as smooth and rapid as possible. These include wearing loose clothes, avoiding strenuous activities, and using ice packs to help reduce swelling or pain. Most swelling will be gone after six weeks, but it may take up to six months to go down completely.
