What is a Tummy Tuck?

After pregnancy, a C-section, weight loss, or simply as a natural part of aging, you may be left with a bulging tummy, excess skin, fatty deposits, and loose or split muscles. This can be difficult or impossible to lose through lifestyle changes such as diet and exercise alone. In a tummy tuck, also known as an abdominoplasty, Dr. Cohen will remove excess skin and fat, tighten the fascia (connective tissue) in the abdomen, then tighten the skin to create a slimmer figure. If a patient has a diastasis recti (abdominal separation) from pregnancy, this will also be corrected during an abdominoplasty.

Full Tummy Tuck or Mini Tummy Tuck?

Once you and Dr. Cohen have determined that a tummy tuck is the most suitable way to achieve your goals, a customized surgical plan will be crafted. Depending on your anatomy and goals, the procedure may involve several steps. The two main types of tummy tucks are a full abdominoplasty and a partial abdominoplasty, or a mini tummy tuck.

  • Full tummy tuck: This procedure removes excess skin and fat across your entire abdomen, both above and below the belly button. It also involves realigning the abdominal muscles. The belly button structure is typically moved to the right location on the newly reshaped lower abdomen.
  • Mini tummy tuck: A mini tummy tuck involves a smaller incision and tightens the skin in the lower half of the abdomen, below the belly button.

The Procedure Steps: Tummy Tuck in Denver

A tummy tuck is typically performed under general anesthesia. Depending on the details of your tummy tuck, the operation will likely take two to four hours to complete. Dr. Cohen will begin by making incisions and will then proceed to pull down the upper abdominal skin and remove excess skin. He will tighten the connective tissue with sutures and may reposition the skin around your belly button. Once your tummy tuck has been completed, he will close the incision site and cover it with bandages.

Who is a Candidate for a Tummy Tuck?

A tummy tuck is ideal for those who dream of restoring a smoother, firmer abdomen after experiencing changes from weight loss, pregnancy, or aging. Candidates typically have excess skin, stubborn fat, or weakened abdominal muscles that do not respond to diet and exercise. The best candidates are those in good overall health, at or near their ideal weight, and fully understand what the procedure entails. If you're seeking a more toned and contoured midsection, a tummy tuck could be the perfect solution to help you feel confident and revitalized.

What is the Recovery Time?

After your tummy tuck, you should expect to take two to three weeks off work or other demanding activities to recover. Your full results will be visible after about six weeks. The surgical scars will continue to heal and fade for about a year. Your results will be long-lasting and can last for a lifetime as long as you maintain a stable weight and a healthy lifestyle.
