Tissue expander reconstruction is a staged approach to breast reconstruction that gradually creates space for a breast implant. This method offers flexibility and control, allowing for a more tailored reconstruction process that aligns with your body’s natural healing timeline.
What is the Procedure?
The tissue expander is placed during the initial surgery, often at the same time as the mastectomy. The expander stretches the skin and or muscle gradually over several weeks or months. During follow-up visits, Dr. Cohen will add saline to the expander through a small valve, allowing the breast area to expand slowly over time. Once the expansion process is complete, the tissue expander is removed in a second surgery, and the final implant or your own tissue is inserted.
